The "Pacheco Dig" When Tom was nine years old, he and his younger brother Paul, along with neighborhood friend David Metcalf, went down to the basement of Tom's more than 200-year-old New Bedford home to dig for "buried Indians". Although they found no buried Indians, they did discover an amazing collection of colonial relics, including clay pipes, pieces of crockery, shoe buckles, and a primitive oil lamp. The story was written up in the local paper.
