Tom returns with Loudoun Castle date

IF YOU’RE a fan of gutsy singer-songwriters and you haven’t yet caught up with American veteran Tom Pacheco, you’ve been missing out big time.

Fortunately, the man from Woodstock — whose songs have been covered by the likes of Jefferson Starship, the Band, Rick Danko and Richie Havens — is returning to the UK for a tour later this year and an Ayrshire date has been added to his handful of Scottish shows. It’s at Loudoun Castle, Galston, on Friday, November 2.

Tickets for the gig are available from the venue (01563 822296) or by ringing 0772 203 0522 or 0787 589 5068.

Pacheco’s albums — he’s now way past his 20th — have sold well in Europe and, somewhat bizarrely, the prolific songwriter has a large following in Norway as well as throughout the UK.

Tom played folk rock in Greenwich Village, New York, in the late 60s and alternative country in Texas in the early 80s. But never one to compromise, he turned his back on the Nashville songwriting factories and spent 10 years based in Dublin, recording the excellent Eagle In The Rain both in the Irish capital and north of the border in County Antrim in the late 80s.

That Round Tower release signalled the start of a major resurgence in Pacheco’s work — “it was the one that got me back on track,” says the man himself — and an ever-growing following to appreciate it.

Produced by Arty McGlynn, Van Morrison’s guitarist, it contained songs like Just A Little Bullet, Robert and Ramona and Jesus In A Leather Jacket, all classics.

He is admired by critics and fellow performers, as well as by perceptive music lovers who claim there’s just nothing to beat a live TP show.

And once again, after several years searching for an Ayrshire venue to replace Andy Fergus’s Turf Inn — success, it’s happening!

Tickets for the Loudoun Castle gig are £8 — or £10 on the night — but if past performances are anything to go by, an early purchase is essential. Hurlford’s own John Strachan provides support on the night.

Ring any of the numbers listed earlier for tickets or more information.
